When I saw this completed, my mouth dropped…I walked through it and I had no words to express what I felt.

Stephen Smith from S3 Architects was the overall winner of the ‘Starter Home Design Competition’ run by the New Zealand Department of Building and Housing (DBH). The competition was to design an affordable home with a habitable floor area no bigger than 120m² and the house should cost no more than $1,400 per square metre to build.
The winning house design will be built by the Housing New Zealand Corporation in Preston Road, Otara, Auckland to showcase and demonstrate that innovative design can result in good quality, affordable housing.
The Judges’ comments
Stephen Smith’s design has excellent planning and a striking contemporary appearance that will fit well into many neighbourhoods.
